Ping Pong Rules & Guides

The official table tennis rules in plain English

Settle the Argument

The rules people ask about most
How many points is a game?
11, and you must win by 2. At 10-10, play on until someone leads by two.
How many serves do you get?
Two each, then the serve switches. From 10-10, one serve each.
Do you have to serve diagonally?
Not in singles: the serve can land anywhere. Only doubles serves go diagonally.
What if the serve hits the net?
If it still lands on the other side, it’s a let. Serve again.
Can you hit the ball before it bounces?
No. That’s a volley, and you lose the point.
Is an edge ball good?
Yes, if it clips the top edge of the table. Off the side, it’s out.

Every rule, with its official ITTF law number, is in our complete guide to the ping pong rules.
