How to Run a Ping Pong Tournament

1. Seed the Players

List the players from strongest to weakest. The bracket uses standard seeding, so the top two seeds are on opposite sides and can only meet in the final, and seeds 1 to 4 can’t meet before the semifinals. If you don’t know everyone’s level, draw names from a hat instead.

2. Handle Byes

If your player count isn’t 4, 8, 16 or 32, use the next bracket size up. The empty spots become byes, which go to the top seeds, and those players go straight to the second round. For example, with 12 players, use the 16-player bracket and seeds 1 to 4 get byes.

3. Pick a Match Format

Under the official rules, a game is played to 11 points and must be won by 2, and a match is best of an odd number of games (ITTF Laws 2.11 and 2.12). For tournaments:

A common setup is best of 3 in the early rounds and best of 5 from the semifinals. Write the format at the top of the bracket so there are no arguments later.

4. Keep Score and Track the Serve

Each player serves two points in a row, and from 10-10 the serve alternates every point. Use our free ping pong scoreboard on a phone or tablet at each table so nobody loses track. Write the games won in the score boxes on the bracket and move the winner to the next round.

5. Have the Rules on Hand

Print our one-page ping pong rules sheet and keep it next to the bracket. For anything it doesn’t cover, check the full ping pong rules or the serve rules.

How Long Does a Ping Pong Tournament Take?

A best-of-5 match usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. A single-elimination bracket has one fewer match than it has players, so an 8-player bracket is 7 matches and a 16-player bracket is 15. With one table and best-of-5 matches, plan about 2 to 3 hours for 8 players. A second table roughly halves the time for the early rounds.
